They just released these results, and be prepared for more scientific scrutiny to come. But if this turns out to be true, then it will radically change the very foundations of Physics.
I was just about to blog about the same thing! I thought they've proven it already?
If they do the things we learnt in physics are obsolete and so is my current analytical chemistry course :p since we're using the speed of light as the basis for everything!
I was shocked when I heard - but I can totally imagine Mrs. Lochhead's excitement when she found out :p
We'll find out in 2013 or so when the detector in Minnesota comes back online and starts receiving neutrinos from FermiLab again. My guess is that there is some sort of error, but it's fun to think about going back in time to prevent Justin Beiber from being born.
@Roza: They are not sure about the results. I mean, if your experiment shows that something can travel faster than the speed of light, you are going to get under a lot of scientific scrutiny.
I was shocked as hell when I heard too, but imagine if it is proven to be true... It would make everything we have learnt in the past 70 years completely obsolete. Maybe we won't have to go to uni anymore until they have come up with new things.. ;D

I was never a physics fan. My mom had her Masters in physics and made me hate it so much.

@DogsOnDrugs: Are you thinking that these results are because of a time-warp like thing being created? Hmn, yeh some people are saying that too.
ReplyDeleteBut you could be right - it can just be some sort of error. Damn, if I was one of the scientists who got that result, I would be so nervous right now!
It's God's way of punishing us for trying to find the Higg's Boson.
